2020-2021 NC State Uniforms Retrospective

The Pack 9 season continues at the Super Regionals in Fayetteville, AR this weekend (June 11 – 13). However, unless they saved some sort of new jersey to go out during the Supers (… or in a hopeful run in the CWS in Omaha), that should mean we’ve all seen it. the new jerseys which Adidas met for the NCSU during the 2020-2021 sporting year.

During this whole ‘no-sport’ period last summer, I dived deep into the MBB, FB, and Baseball uniforms worn by State in the 2010s. Below are links to each of them:

Baseball: Part 1 | Part 2

Basketball: Part 1

Football: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

With the 2020-2021 sporting year now almost over, I wanted to detail the new additions we’ve seen on the court / court / diamond over this past year.

Oversized Tuffy Head Helmet Logo:

It wasn’t a new helmet or jersey that was introduced, but what State did with the FB uniforms in 2020 was they increased the size of the Tuffy logo on the helmet. In previous years, the Tuffy head logo on the helmet was much smaller and harder to see on TV and in the IMO stadium.

This oversized Tuffy head was first introduced on the Ice Wolf alternative uniform sets introduced in 2018, and was also used in the Stealth Wolf alternative uniform set used in 2019, but has not been standardized. on all helmets before 2020.

In comparison:

Blood Moon Alternates:

NC State kicked off new alternative football against Florida State in 2021. These Blood Moon substitutes featured a red top with black numbers / stripes and “WOLFPACK” across the chest.

I am certainly not a big fan of these uniforms. I don’t think the two dark colors work very well together, plus the pants and helmet were just transfers from the normal black alternatives.

State MBB and WBB had some overlap with their jerseys in 2020-21, but there were some minor differences in the white / red home / away primary uniforms. The WBB uniforms remained largely the same in 2020-2021, but the MBB uniforms underwent some notable changes from the previous year, not all of which were for the better.

MBB Home Uniforms:

The main changes in 2020-2021 were as follows: (1) they got rid of the alternating red / black piping along the arm sleeves and made it all white, and (2) they decided to finally add a black outline to the “NC STATE” inscription on the chest.

However, my problem with these jerseys is that they don’t look as good as the all-white jersey set that they came out of nowhere in 2019 and then strangely never used again. I’m also not a fan of the fact that they got rid of the “PACK” written on the leg of the shorts on all 2020-2021 uniforms (which can also be seen at the bottom of the photo of the 2019 jersey linked below -above ).

I’m just not a huge fan of these in general. I know the whole “we are state red and white, not state red and black” crowd rightly gets a lot of grief when it comes to using colors other than red or white, but I’m just not a fan of mixing too much black and red like these. I’m much more in favor of keeping the black coloring for contouring purposes and using it as the main color on alternative jerseys like the ones linked below.

WBB and MBB Black replacements:

Both WBB and MBB wore these new black replacements in 2020-2021. I don’t believe the MBB team wore them again after that frustrating overtime loss to Clemson, but the WBB team wore them a lot, including in the 2021 ACC tournament championship game against Louisville.

I really liked these last ones. Personally, I would also be very much in favor of a permanent change and a “WOLFPACK” on the chest of the FB, WBB and MBB uniforms.

Red / white pinstripe set:

State unveiled a new pinstripe red look on opening day in 2021.

I’m a huge fan of the pinstripe red uniforms and love the addition of “WOLFPACK” on the chest of this new set.

Black Uniform Set:

As seen in the video above, State introduced a new black jersey with red “NC STATE” lettering and alternating red / white / black rings around the sleeve. It’s much better than some of the older black uniforms used by Pack 9, but still doesn’t quite compare to some of the other uniform options State Baseball has.

Gray Vest Uniform Set:

White vest uniform set:

As Part 1 of last year’s baseball uniform retrospective shows, State has used the white and gray vest a lot over the years, mostly with an S block on one side of the vest.

Personally, I still prefer the Block S to be used over the Tuffy exclusively for baseball, but if they become completely Tuffy, and therefore phase out Block S for the entire athletics department (apart from the baseball hats). baseball camo apparently), so I’m all in favor of using “WOLFPACK” on the chest of these vests rather than throwing another Tuffy head somewhere on these with the same logo already on the hat.

That’s all the new uniform looks I’ve taken note of over the past year. I’ve included a poll below to garner a vote on everyone’s favorite among the new looks introduced in 2020-2021.
