A fire breaks out in the huge American Dream mall in New Jersey

A fire broke out before dawn on Saturday at the American Dream Mall, long before the sprawling Meadowlands resort in New Jersey opened.

The three-alarm fire apparently broke out in the area of the Big Snow ski slope. Firefighters from the on-site Meadowlands Fire Department joined businesses in East Rutherford, Wood-Ridge and other surrounding communities to tackle a blaze that had spread outside the building.

Few details were provided by authorities, who referred questions to New Jersey State Police, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The massive 3 million square foot shopping and entertainment complex just off the toll highway in East Rutherford opened at the end of 2019.

The Big SNOW is a 16-story, 180,000 square foot indoor ski and snowboard park that is kept cold by heavy-duty coolers that maintain a temperature of 28 degrees year-round.
